Cal Crook: Nature & Native American Photography
Scenic || Celilo Falls | |Navajo || Gorge Area Shows
CELILO FALLS
In I948 my father, Cal Crook, captured some spectacular color photographs
along the Columbia River Gorge at Celilo Falls. This historic Native American fishing grounds ceased to exist in 1957 when The Dalles Dam swallowed up a
thousand-year cultural heritage where fathers and sons had dip-netted for
salmon on the seven islands and shores of the Columbia River.
MONUMENT VALLEY
In the 1940's Dad made two trips into Monument Valley, Arizona, by pack mule in order to photograph the Navajo in their stunning, but isolated world. View the magnificent valley from the hogan where men rest in the mid-day heat, where women spin and weave and grind corn. See the children dwarfed by cathedral rock formations, bright-costumed against the hot sands and azure-blue sky.
SCENIC View some of Cal's Columbia River Gorge photography where he spent
countless hours waiting for just the right sunrise or sunset or the perfect
shadow and light on the mountains and waterfalls and rivers surrounding him.
Mt. Adams, Mt. Hood, Mt. St. Helens encircled him, as did all of nature,
including Walter the deer who, for two years, shared his morning breakfast
with Cal at his beloved BZ Corner home (see Cal and Walter). View his
favorite "Cherish Rose" from his once-spectacular garden of dahlias, lilacs
and roses and experience some of the beauty and life that captured his heart
in the Mt. Adams Country of the Columbia River Gorge.
